THIRTEEN

5:17.

5:33.

6:12.

6:26.

I have walked the house for hours. I am, indeed, ‘beside myself’. I have been outside of my own body for hours. I’m not real; I’m functioning, but I’m not here.

I’ve considered getting back in the car and driving the streets. I’ve considered sitting outside Sarah’s house to force her to talk to me. I’ve thought about going back to that party house and finding someone, anyone who might know Joe.

But I haven’t done any of it.

6:38. The sky is bearing that blue hint of carbon.

6:40.

… 41…

The silence booms in my ears as I watch the clock, wanting to phone Sarah, scared of what she’s going to tell me, scared she won’t turn up.

I have two hours to wait: two hours of agony.

I think about contacting the airport again.

Joe was at that house last night. He didn’t get on a plane. He lied. Sarah is going to tell me something I don’t want to hear. The worst thing. What’s the worst? I can’t go there. She knows that I’ve lied to her too. She will never forgive me if my lies have hurt Nate.

What have I done? What have I got involved in?

I pick up a piece of paper and a pen.

I train Samaritans volunteers. I tell them that the callers need to write down their feelings if they can: that somehow by seeing it all laid in front of them, they can get some clarity. I write,

I don’t think I can forgive myself. I’ve driven everyone away. I can’t see any way out of this mess. I’m completely alone.
